The Monument to time, or divided house is a building designed by Benson & Forsyth. It was build in Oshima’s central park, Japan but has now been dismantled. The building is divided by a reinforced concrete wall into two structures. The first part, made of straw, represents traditional Japanese craftsmanship and agricultural cultivation. The other structure, made of new materials, represents industrialization and modernity.

  1. What does the site look like now, that it has been dismantled? When did the change take place and why?

I worked with Benson and Forsyth throughout the construction and completion of this monument and feel a bit shocked by this news (new or old).

Please let me know asap, as I am planning to travel to Japan in 2 months, and this was definitely on my itinerary.

    Regards,
    Cally
