Tsukioka Kōgyo (1869-1927) was a japanese ukiyo-e painter, working with woodblock prints. He designed many prints following the shikishiban (almost square) format. Most of them are illustrations of the natural world, a genre referred to as Kachō-e (flower-and-bird pictures). Barley at Sunrise is one of the prints he designed for the publisher Daikokuya, who later reprinted many of them, mainly for the export market.
